Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.

2020

Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…

A novel copper compound, CuNV110, induces apoptosis in tumor cells by dissociation of the Hsp60- pro-caspase 3 complex

2015

The biological activity of CuNV1110, a novel copper chemical compound, has been recently studied on cancer cells and it has been showed that it reduces the cell viability, in a dose and time dependent manner, and induces cell apoptosis. In this study we evaluated the possible mechanisms by which CuNV1110 induces cell apoptosis. In particular we looked at its effects on Hsp60 levels and caspase 3 activation. We used an in vitro model of a pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (NCI-H292 cells). We found that CuNV1110 reduces the cell viability and induces cell apoptosis in a dose/time dependent manner. Then, we found that Hsp60 levels decrease with the increasing concentrations of CuNV110; by co…

Wee1 inhibition potentiates Wip1-dependent p53-negative tumor cell death during chemotherapy

2016

AbstractInactivation of p53 found in more than half of human cancers is often associated with increased tumor resistance to anti-cancer therapy. We have previously shown that overexpression of the phosphatase Wip1 in p53-negative tumors sensitizes them to chemotherapeutic agents, while protecting normal tissues from the side effects of anti-cancer treatment. In this study, we decided to search for kinases that prevent Wip1-mediated sensitization of cancer cells, thereby interfering with efficacy of genotoxic anti-cancer drugs. To this end, we performed a flow cytometry-based screening in order to identify kinases that regulated the levels of γH2AX, which were used as readout. Another criter…
